11 Years in Design - A conversaation with Myself
Was thinking about how far I’ve come as a designer, 11 years in and ended up interviewing myself.
So here it is.
Some lessons. Some stumbles. Some thoughts I’m still figuring out.
Let’s go back. Why did you become a designer?
Honestly, I started with curiosity. I liked solving problems visually. It wasn’t about fancy tools or aesthetics.
It was the joy of figuring out how things work and how they could work better.
When did you start feeling confident?
Around year 4 to 6. I began leading small projects and owning decisions. I still made mistakes—but I bounced back quicker. That’s when I realized:
Good design is more about collaboration than solo brilliance.
How did mentoring shape you?
It revealed my blind spots. Explaining my process made me refine it. I learned:
Listen more than direct
People grow differently
Quiet leadership is powerful
What’s changed in the last couple of years?
Everything and nothing. Design tools evolved. AI became real. But the heart of design—understanding people—stayed the same.
In year 10–11, :
I embraced systems over screens
I focused on team culture
I started seeing AI as a partner, not a threat
What lessons stand out the most?
Here are five that guide me:
Stay curious, not just current
Feedback is fuel
Don’t overvalue tools
Share before it’s perfect
Growth isn’t linear
